Living the dream. How can I do it as well?

Nevermind Adventure Tours Patagonia

“Matt you really are living the dream”. I hear this a bit. Kind of goes with the territory. It is usually when I am rushing off to Tullamarine Airport running late for an international flight.

I used to respond by laughing and saying things like “It’s not what it’s cracked up to be. All those long-haul flights and sterile hotel rooms.” or “You wouldn’t think that if you knew how much work and stress is involved” or “if you saw my bank balance”. It’s the Aussie way. Tall poppy syndrome and all that so just always talk yourself down.

I think this was because I did not want to stand out. I did not want anyone to think I was getting too big for my boots or think I was some kind of bigshot. For a long time, I dimmed my headlights so that I would not make anyone else feel bad. I kept my head down to avoid getting it shot off.  ]

I downplayed my achievements. I still do. We all do..

Operating motorcycle tours all over the world. Here in Australia, Rajasthan, India, Nepal, Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Patagonia, South America, Ireland and Vietnam. I think I have become quite good at it, maybe even the best. Perhaps that is an achievement after all. I mean it is something I wanted to do and then I did it.

Yes, it was once just a pipe dream. Now I am doing it and have done so for over 10 years. I guess I am living my dream. Actually, I had the pleasure of creating it twice thanks to the pandemic and our wonderful elected leaders.

And I am incredibly grateful that I have had the opportunity and for everything experienced along the way.

And I know that my loyal colleague, Frankie, (who unlike me actually is talented), feels much the same. More on that later.

I personally do not have any special talents or skills.

I would likely score below most of you on an IQ test.

I am at best “average” in all aspects of life. I am not exceptionally good looking; I am of average height and come from an uncultured, decaying regional Australian town with a fairly unremarkable working class suburban Australian upbringing. Not even a major city to claim as home.

Despite this mediocrity I have managed to do a few remarkable things that some people have suggested they would also like to do.

Like travel the world. Ride motorcycles. For a living.

To do things you enjoy and get paid for it. It can be done and I am certain proof that anybody can do it.

How can you live the dream as well?

I can think of two ways.

The first is high risk and takes a bit of inner work. Not a great deal, just learning to manage fear. Mainly the fear of losing everything, fear of going broke. Of living under a bridge or in a tent. This did happen to me and if you choose this option, it will probably happen to you at some point. It isn’t that bad by the way. Keep in mind that life is meant to be experienced. Experiences may be even more important than accumulating money and stuff. I do not know yet but I will let you know when I find out.

“What we are most afraid of is sometimes what we need to do to get where we want to be.” Quote by Me (probably read it somewhere). If this makes sense you are probably already living the dream.

I hope I don’t sound like I am preaching. I am genuinely trying to be helpful. So here it is step by step.

  1. Do what it is you want to do. Think worst-case scenario, then doing whatever it is you want to do anyway is all it takes. Do it knowing that you will work it out no matter what happens, and you will
  2. Stop doing things you don’t want to do. If that is a job you hate then quit. Same goes for anything really, except exercise, keep doing that. And read books. Don’t stop doing that.
  3. Trust your instincts and trust yourself. There may be lean and tough times ahead but it will all work out. I have been so impressed by how strong we humans can be. We can endure pretty much anything.

You may not live the dream of travelling for a living, writing a book, becoming a youtuber or a musician. Whatever your dream is try.

  1. Keep trying and make mistakes. Make heaps of them.

Your life will become magical and exciting very quickly.

One thing I can promise you. You will “fail”. Many times. You will get kicked in the balls, hard.

But just get up every day and try again.

2. Enjoy the process. Yes, it’s cliche but it’s truth.

This is the path I chose. I chose risk, to do it the hard way. I had property, a young family, nice car and good job. Yet I felt there was more to life so I walked away from the comfort and security of my career. I risked losing “it all”. I made more mistakes than anyone I know and I still do. I failed over and over and still do. I have lost a “fortune”. I lost my home, my family and many friends along the way.

I am living my dream life. I am doing something exciting and challenging that I enjoy most of the time. I am sharing my work and energy with the world and perhaps even doing something of value to the world. I think this is important.

I now have a solid roof over my head and a few close friends. I have my family. I know I prosperous times are coming.

It has been all be good. All of the experiences have been an essential part of my journey. Part of what I needed to experience to get to where I am headed.

You may not need to lose everything. Or you may need to. There is only one way to find out.

Stop doing what you do not want to do.

Then there is the other way. Perhaps a smarter and definitely lower risk way.

Look for someone who seems to be living the dream and team up with them. To do this you are going to have to generously give something of value. You are going to have to contribute to the dream. It might be your time. Perhaps your talents or skills or perhaps money. You are going to have to be prepared to have skin in the game.

This is the way Frankie scored her dream job travelling, creating and riding motorbikes. Years of learning a skill set, loyalty, patience and developing a complimentary skill set. Sometimes at her own expense and always giving more than asked and always having my back. And “giving” without always expecting something immediately in return. Getting on with it and contributing even when things do not go as expected.

Your tolerance to risk will decide which path is best for you. We are all different and I am sure there are many more pathways. Some higher risk and some lower these are just a few that come to mind.

There are far more intelligent and experienced people out there than me. Seek them out. Watch their vids and read their books. But stop doing things you do not want to do.

What have you got to lose?

It is all just a game after all.

And if you are not ready yet why not take an adventure with me? It might just be the catalyst that you need to take the plunge.

Sri Lanka is nice in October! I will be there.

About Matt

Matthew Natonewski is a multi-faceted entrepreneur and adventurer. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Deakin University and has worked as an environmental advisor with the EPA and for major companies like BHP Billiton and Chevron on some of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects. However, in 2012, he left the relative comfort and security of this career path to pursue his passion for adventure, travel and motorcycles, founding Nevermind Adventure Tours.

Nevermind offers an old school approach to adventure motorcycle tours and are all led by Matt personally.

Matt’s journey exemplifies his adventurous spirit and determination to forge an unconventional path. From quitting his job on a whim to hitch-hiking across Africa and starting a business from scratch, rebuilding it after the pandemic, he has persistently and steadily grown the Nevermind brand.

Matt was inspired to restart Nevermind Adventure Tours after the pandemic by his unwavering passion for adventure and sharing incredible experiences with others through motorcycle adventures.

Despite the devastating impact of the pandemic shutdown, Matt spent two years meticulously planning and preparing for Nevermind’s revival, revamping tours, design and researching new destinations, and assembling a passionate team.

His determination paid off, with bookings surpassing pre-pandemic levels as people sought to “reconnect with their sense of wonder and freedom on the open road” through Nevermind’s epic journeys.

Matt believes the overwhelming response shows “the unbreakable spirit of adventure that lives within all of us”, driving his inspirational comeback story.

Matt’s lifelong zeal for adventure motorcycling, his family legacy in the business, and the opportunity to reignite that spirit of exploration in others motivated him to resurrect Nevermind Adventure Tours after the pandemic setback.

Nevermind Adventure Tours Roars Back to Life

An Inspirational Comeback Story After Overcoming the global Pandemic

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA (June 11, 2023) – In an inspirational tale of resilience and determination, Nevermind Adventure Tours, Australia’s premier motorcycle touring company, has made a triumphant return after being forced to shut down operations during the extreme pandemic measures imposed by the Victorian Government.

Founded in 2012 by passionate adventurer Matt Natonewski, Nevermind Adventure Tours had established itself as the go-to provider of unforgettable two-wheeled experiences across world’s most breathtaking landscapes. However, the unprecedented restrictions brought on by the pandemic brought this thriving business to a screeching halt in 2020.

“Those were incredibly challenging times,” recalls Matt “To have our tours abruptly canceled and our entire livelihood decimated was devastating. But I knew this was bigger than just my business – it was about preserving the spirit of adventure that Nevermind Adventure Tours represented.”

Undeterred, Matt spent the next two years meticulously planning and preparing for the company’s revival. He revamped tour offerings, implemented enhanced health and safety protocols, and assembled a team of seasoned guides who shared his passion for exploration.

That perseverance has paid off in a big way. Nevermind Adventure Tours has not only resumed operations but is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, with bookings surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Riders from across Australia and around the world are once again embarking on epic journeys through the rugged Himalayan mountains, Sri Lankan coastal paradises, and everywhere in between.

“The overwhelming response has been humbling and incredibly gratifying,” beams Matti. “It’s a testament to the unbreakable spirit of adventure that lives within all of us. We’re not just offering tours; we’re giving people a chance to reconnect with their sense of wonder and freedom on the open road.”

With its legendary tours fully operational once more, Nevermind Adventure Tours stands as a beacon of inspiration, proving that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome through perseverance, innovation, and an unwavering love for adventure.

Nevermind Adventure Tours is Australia’s premier provider of guided motorcycle tours. With a team of experienced guides and a fleet of late-model bikes, the company offers epic journeys through world’s most stunning landscapes. For more information, visit
