Day 1 (24th March): Arrive El Calafate

El Calafate is a stunning village outpost on the fringe of the world’s second largest glacial ice field, The one and only Southern Patagonian ice field.

Whilst in El Calafate we will visit the monumental Perito Moreno Glacier. This glacier is the real deal and an excursion out to the glacial wall by boat is a must. On our last visit we were able to experience “The Rupture” where chucks of the ice wall collapse into the surrounding lakes. This is something not to be taken lightly when an enormous chuck of ice the size of a skyscraper collapses into the water. The sound is explosive and sends shivers down ones spine.

El Calafate is friendly and fun and funky with small bars and cafes and makes for the ideal place to kick off this incredible adventure.

Day 2: El Calafate

After visiting Perito Moreno Glacier and exploring El Calafate, sampling the local version of Argentinian Empanadas, the local brews and wines we have an amazing sunset visit to Lago Argentino see the 40,000 year old cave paintings. These paintings have mysteriously been linked to the style of the Australian Aboriginal paintings of the same era and archeologies have never been able to connect the dots, perhaps we will! Whilst out in the wilderness we will sample traditional food and local wine in the shade of ancient cliffs by the lakeside whilst the sunsets.

And is that is not enough action we then head to a local chefs home for dinner with his family and friends for our welcome dinner. Tonight you will experience the tastes, culture and hospitality of Patagonia very few people will ever get to experience.

El Chalten is Argentina’s trekking capital and is well set up as a base for visitors. A great place to stop in for the night and one of the last places we are likely to see any other tourists for quite a while.

The ride will take us most of the day and is stunning and fun all the way following the famous Routa 40. We will stop into some surprise local spots along the way that we have discovered on our previous visits.

Day 5: Lago Posadas

Prepare for another wild day of the road in outback Argentina! We set off early to avoid the insane winds that can kick up later in the day. It’s a challenging day but the roads will have you smiling all the way.

Day 7: Puerto Rio Tranquilo

We will take advantage of the morning to navigate the incredible scenes of Lake General Carrera, where we ditch the bikes for a boat trip to explore the Marble Cathedrals.

Puerto Rio Tranquilo is a small picturesque village along the Lake General Carrera, which is the largest lake in Chile. It is known for its overwhelming beauty, including several famous icons of the Carretera Austral, such as the Marble cathedrals and the Exploradores Glacier.

When we arrive to our lake side accomodation, you can enjoy a delicious local wine on the balcony and gaze across the picturesque lake.  After experiencing Puerto Rio Tranquilo you will have this imprinted in your mind as your happy place.

Today’s adventure is a feast for your eyes! As we journey through the final stretch of Carretera Austral, your heart will skip a beat with every glance at the crystal clear lakes and majestic snow-capped peaks. Our route will take us around Nacional Cerro Castillo, a mountainous playground featuring epic basalt formations and glaciers that will make your eyes water.

We’ll end the day in Coyhaique, what was once a small agricultural town, has now grown to be the largest city in the south of Chile. Here you have a selection of cute cafes, restaurants and even check out the handicraft market in town.

We continue advancing along the Carretera Austral, where we hit more of the ever green forest scapes with blue lakes on route to Puyuhuapi. Here, we find Zen on a Remote River Side Lodge after a picturesque day of riding, we finally reach our destination: a secluded lodge by the river. This place embodies the very essence of tranquility. With a short boat ride, we can get close to the glacier’s edge and observe the massive accumulation of ice and the cascading waterfalls tumbling down the mountainside. After a day of pure adventure, return to the luxurious comforts of our lake side lodge and indulge in all the amenities it has to offer.

Day 11: Esquel

Our international crossing into Argentina begins today, where we will travel through the breathtaking Valdiviana jungle. This vast stretch of coastal forest is a remnant of a bygone era, when it was once connected to the forests of New Zealand and Australia. Interestingly, some of the species found here are more closely related to those from those distant places, rather than the Americas. During the last Ice Age, this coastal range served as a critical refuge for countless species that could not survive anywhere else on Earth.

Without a doubt, as you’re riding through you will feel one with nature and enjoy everything that this amazing planet offers you.

Our day begins early, setting off for another picturesque ride. The highlight of the region is undoubtedly Los Alerces National Park in the Andes, home to thousands of ancient trees, serene lakes, and meandering rivers.
